Bernice Carter Obituary

Clinton, NC

June 11, 2021

Bernice Franklin Carter, 102, of the Ingold Community, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at The Gardens of Nashville, in Nashville, NC.

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM, Sunday, June 13th at Clinton City Cemetery, Rev. Ray Carter and Rev. Michael Salisbury officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately after the interment at the graveside.

He will be available for viewing Saturday, June 12th from 9 AM – 2 PM, and again Sunday, June 13th from 9 AM – 2 PM at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Bernice, born June 1, 1919 in Sampson County, was the son of the late John Wright Carter and Maggie Mae Fryar Carter.  On January 9, 1949, he married Thelma Boyette, the love of his life.  They were married for 61 years.  He was a farmer, a member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church and served in the US Army during World War II.

Bernice loved his family and was very proud of each one.  He enjoyed a good laugh and loved to make others laugh. For most of his life, Bernice planted a large garden with a variety of fruits and vegetables.  He loved to go places, but he equally loved to get back home after a few days as he would be longing to be back home in Sampson County.  He lived his life with the philosophy of treating others the way you would want them to treat you.  He always advocated and pushed his children to get a good education. Bernice always had a strong will and spirit to live, even as his body weakened with age.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; and all his siblings -- Oleta Carter Fields, Albert Carter, Edward Carter, Joseph Carter, Jessie Carter Jones, Alene Carter Matthis, Graham Carter, Clara Carter and Beatrice Carter.

Survivors include:  his children -- Carolyn Murray (Joe) of Nashville, NC, Donald Carter (Kathy) of Raleigh, Jimmy Carter (Cindy) of Greenville, NC and Teresa Transou (Mark) of Lenoir; his grandchildren -- Meredith Transou, Amanda Transou, Frank Murray (Laura), Robert Murray (Phoebe), Bradley Murray (Kristin), Eric Carter, Christopher Carter (Leslie), Clifton Carter (Emily) and Matthew Carter (Yasha); and his five great-grandchildren.

On line condolences may be sent to the family at www.crumpler-honeycutt.com.

“The family wishes to especially thank Terry Williams and his family for their close friendship to Bernice Carter and for all their help over the years.  The family also wishes to thank Geraldine Hicks for her years of dedicated caregiving.”    Memorials may be made in his name to Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in care of Cathy Jones, PO Box 35, Turkey, NC  28395.
