Sam was born January 2nd, 1950 in Asheboro, North Carolina.  He is survived by his three children, Susan Kitchin McElhinney and husband Lance, of Denver, Anna Clark Kitchin of Elizabeth City, and Catherine Eugenia Kitchin of Chapel Hill and three grandchildren, Colin Reed McElhinney, Robert Kitchin “Kitch” McElhinney and Amelia Ann McElhinney of Denver.  He is also survived by his siblings, William Walton Kitchin Jr. and wife Anne of Greenville, and Clark Kitchin Larson and husband Randy, of Winston-Salem as well as 7 nieces and nephews.

Sam was born, the middle child of three, to the late Dr. William Walton and Nancy Brewer Kitchin of Clinton.  He was an avid golfer by the age of 8 and at age 10 was a North/South Carolina Junior State Champion.  Sam graduated from Wake Forest University, earning his History degree in 1974.  While there, Sam made many of his life-long friends and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  While at Wake Forest, Sam played on the 1974 Golf Team which won an NCAA Championship.  Sam remained an avid Wake Forest fan and relished taking his girls to see them play football and basketball, while catching up with old friends.

Sam found his calling in life through teaching and coaching in Sampson County, most recently at Midway High School.  His Midway family was very important to him and going to any, and all, of their sporting events was a mainstay in his schedule.   He was a natural with students, a treasured faculty member and coach.  He knew how to make you feel like the most important person in the room and genuinely cared for others.  Sam was a consummate jokester and enjoyed telling stories that included enough embellishment to leave you guessing.  He was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back and the long list of people that were his great friends is a testament to that quality.  The Family is particularly grateful for the local hospice care and the compassionate support provided to him during his time at home.

Sam leaves behind friends and family that loved him dearly.  He was so proud of his daughters and all that they have accomplished.  Those who knew him were lucky, those that called him friend were blessed.

In lieu of flowers, The Family have established a scholarship, for a deserving Midway Senior, in his name. Contributions may be sent to Sam Kitchin Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Clark Kitchin Larson, 3770 Kirklees Rd, Winston-Salem NC 27104.  A Celebration of Life will be held for Sam in summer of 2021 with the assistance of Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home, in Clinton.
